Breaking Cycles, Building Futures – October 2026

The circumstances you're born into shouldn't determine the future that's possible for you.

One of the things Bob and I have believed from the earliest days of our Foundation is that the circumstances you’re born into shouldn’t determine the future that’s possible for you.

But changing the trajectory of a life, or an entire family, rarely comes down to one thing.

Sometimes it starts with giving a child a safe and stable place to land. Sometimes it’s a caring mentor, a creative outlet, or the chance to discover a talent. Other times, it’s learning how to manage money, preparing for a career, continuing an education, or having the stability to pursue a goal that once felt out of reach.

That’s why I’m so inspired by the many different ways our nonprofit partners are helping Arizona’s youth and families build stronger futures.

Child Crisis Arizona is a wonderful example. Their work recognizes that when a child or family is facing a difficult situation, there is rarely just one challenge to address. From emergency shelter and early education to parenting resources, counseling and support for young adults transitioning from foster care, they meet families at many different points along the way.

Rosie’s House and Art Heals Arizona approach opportunity from another direction, using creativity to help young people build confidence and resilience. At Rosie’s House, free music education is paired with mentorship, leadership opportunities, and college and career guidance. Art Heals Arizona gives children who have experienced trauma opportunities to express themselves, develop a sense of self, and build resilience through the arts.

Then there are the practical skills that help young people turn possibility into a plan. As a Junior Achievement alum myself, I know how valuable it can be to learn about money, careers, and entrepreneurship at an early age. Today, Junior Achievement of Arizona is bringing those experiences to thousands of students across our community, helping them develop skills and confidence they can carry into adulthood.

And sometimes, the opportunity to change a family’s future begins with a parent.

Dress for Success Arizona’s EducateHER program is helping women, particularly single mothers, pursue career-focused education while addressing very real barriers like tuition, childcare, transportation, and technology. Save the Family’s Phoenix Scholar House takes a similarly comprehensive approach, combining affordable housing with education, career development, and family support so single parents can pursue degrees and credentials while creating greater stability for their children.

What I love about these organizations is that none of them approaches this work in quite the same way.

Yet they share an understanding that has shaped our philanthropy from the beginning: helping someone through today’s challenge matters, but creating the opportunity to change what tomorrow looks like can have an impact for generations.

A child who feels safe can begin to dream. A young person who discovers confidence can start to see what’s possible. A student who understands money and careers can make more informed choices. And a parent who earns a degree or credential can change not only their own future, but their family’s as well.

That’s how cycles begin to change.

We are grateful to support the organizations doing this work every day and helping more Arizona families build futures filled with possibility.
